PCC Hosts Workshops for Parents of Special Needs Children

Photos and story by

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – The Portland Community College Sylvania Women’s Resource Center will host a series of workshops to address ways parents with special needs child can advocate in the public schools. The workshops will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 31 and Friday, Feb. 21 in the Fir Room of the CC building at the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The workshops will teach parents how to present their concerns and problems, prepare for meetings and search for win-win solutions. They will learn how to use their emotions as a source of energy and power, and how to focus on getting an appropriate education for their child. The workshops are free and open to the public.Debbie Young-Luty, an autism consultant for the Tigard/Tualatin School District and a PCC student advocate with the Sylvania Women’s Resource Center will host the talks. The workshops were borne out of the fact that special education services are intensive and expensive due to limited resources. Parents with special needs children could spend time trying to coax their school district for the appropriate services. To prevail, they need information, skills and tools.Pre-registration is appreciated. Registration can be made by calling 503-977-8101 or e-mail at wrc@pcc.edu with your name, address and telephone number. Please mention which sessions you will be attending.
