PORTLAND, Ore. – If you are interested in helping direct the policies and budget of the state’s largest higher education institution, the time to file for positions is now. The deadline to file for one of four positions on the Portland Community College board of directors is Thursday, March 20. The PCC district covers 1,500 square miles in Northwest Oregon and is in all or part of Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Yamhill and Columbia counties. The terms of four current board members will expire on June 30, 2003. An election to fill those terms will be held on May 20, 2003.The positions up for election in 2003 are Zone 2 (which includes portions of North and Northeast Portland and Columbia County), Zone 3 (which includes portions of Southeast and Northeast Portland) Zone 6 (which covers mid-Washington County, including Beaverton, Newberg and Aloha) and Zone 7 (Hillsboro and western Washington County). Those seeking to run for the positions are required to live in the zone they hope to represent. Zones 2 and 7 are four-year terms while zones 3 and 6 are until 2005 because they were filled vacancies. The board members currently holding these positions are Harold Williams (Zone 2); Bob Palmer (Zone 3); Maureen Breckenridge, who was appointed early this year with the resignation of Mike Hereford, (Zone 6); and Karen McKinney (Zone 7). The incumbents may run for re-election and are not limited in the number of terms they serve. The PCC Board of Directors is responsible for the budget and overall policy direction and governance of the college. Board meetings are held twice a month, in the evening, generally on the first and third Thursday.
