PCC class offers proven diet strategies for fight against cancer

Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – You can do something to fight it. Research shows a direct correlation between diet and cancer that can dramatically reduce the risks and effects of this ravaging disease. Now you can learn how to harness this new weapon for yourself through a new non-credit course, offered by Portland Community College. Both current victims and those wishing to prevent cancer are encouraged to attend Diet, Your Health and Cancer. Students will survey several diets currently in study, reviewing them from a medical, nutritional and evolutionary background. Through recipes and food samples, you will discover key diet inclusions to fight cancer as well as reduce the risk of other health problems. The class will be led by John Volpe, a professional cancer researcher. Volpe has studied the disease exclusively for the past 13 years, and has published more than 20 articles and a book chapter on how to fight it. He is a past professor of biology at Portland State University, and is currently teaching biology at PCC. The class will meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon for two Saturdays, April 19 and April 26, in Room 321 of the HT Building at PCC’s Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Cost to PCC is $35 with an additional $6 fee payable to the instructor in class.
