Photos and story by

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – The Northview Gallery at Portland Community College will host Portland artist Tim Miller’s "Return of the Devout"exhibit. His collection of work involves sculpture installations on the necessity of tools, from the early use of stones to the purr of modern motors. Miller’s exhibit will be on display from Monday, March 31 through Wednesday, April 30. There will be an artist’s talk at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9 in the gallery, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave.Miller explores the aspect when humans first picked up a stick or rock or blade of grass and modified it to perform some task that set off down a path that leads to the world we live in. "For better or worse, we find our lives dominated by our tools,"he said. "The phones we carry with us at all times, our cars, computers and all are things we would all find it hard to do without. Are these necessities or signs of our dependence? I use this work to ask these questions and reflect on these ideas."Northview Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
