HILLSBORO, Ore. – Hundreds of girls from 27 metro-area middle schools will converge at the Washington Country Fair Complex in Hillsboro on Wednesday, March 12, from 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., to explore their burgeoning interest in science and technology. The PAVTEC Education Consortium, under the leadership of Portland Community College, has set up a wide variety of hands-on activities and presentations to introduce middle school girls to careers in science and technology.Activities for this year’s conference, entitled "Opening Doors to Your Future,"include, "Just Girls and Robots,"presented by Janet Rash of Intel; "Ear Bones in Fish,"an exercise in removing earbones and counting rings to determine the age of a fish, by Marine Fisheries; "Top secret: A day in the life of an FBI agent,"by Sandra Flint, Special Agent, FBI; and "Ladies of the ARC,"a hands-on opportunity for girls to weld, led by PCC Welding instructor Connie Christopher; and 15 other workshops. Celeste Baine of the Engineering Education Service Center in Eugene as well as the director of integrated technology at Louisiana Tech University and the publisher of Pre-Engineering Times, will keynote the day. The event is sponsored by the PAVTEC Education Consortium to encourage middle school girls to set goals and aspire to achieve by offering a day of exposure to professional women. The women provide positive role models and hands-on experiences that hopefully will impact the girls as they return to their school and home environments to become successful students. Located at the PCC Rock Creek Campus, the PAVTEC consortium, which is made up of high schools in the PCC district, encourages access to professional and technical education for high school students.
