Photos and story by James Hill
ROCK CREEK CAMPUS Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Art Gallery will host the exhibit "As the snail lives in his spiral world,"a two-month retrospective of the drawings of Portland artist and long-time PCC faculty member, William Dyas Garnett.Garnett’s exhibit will have two separate shows, the first running until Nov 26 and the second going from Monday, Jan. 5 through Jan. 30. A reception for the artist will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13. A gallery talk will also take place from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2004 in Room 122 of Building 3. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public. For both months the gallery will present Garnett’s drawings in the context of his artistic process, which is a ritual of daily practice from which few artifacts survive. He uses scraps from his drawing process and tacks them to the gallery walls as if they were still in the artist’s studio. The works of art in many instances are taped, ripped, clipped and collaged."Many people draw, but few draw as fluently or as richly as William Dyas Garnett,"said PCC art instructor and gallery director Mark Andres. "His drawings reflect a restless process of seeing, a fury of means and an intense engagement in the human condition." Free posters for this show are available in the gallery. Rock Creek Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, visit the gallery’s Web site at: www.spot.pcc.edu/rockcreekgallery.
