PCC Hosts International Education Week

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Community College is celebrating national International Education Week 2003 with a wide array of events, including films, informative lectures and dance performances.International Education Week 2003 will be celebrated at each PCC campus from Nov. 17-21. The keynote presenter will be Mark Mathabane, the South African author of the best-selling autobiography, "Kaffir Boy,"who will discuss Apartheid in South Africa. He’ll present his experiences growing up in South Africa’s toughest ghettoes, Alexandria Township.Mathabane will speak from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the Forum of Building 3 at the Rock Creek Campus, 17705 N.W. Springville Road. He will also present from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19 in Room 122 of Terrell Hall at the Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth, and Thursday, Nov. 20 in the Little Theater of the CT Building at the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave.Other events during the week will include a National Geographic photo exhibit, "Material World,"speakers on intercultural communications on PCC’s staff’s global experiences and international student issues, as well as global opportunities with Volunteers for Peace, Peace Corps and Study Abroad programs.International Education Week 2003 is a joint initiative of the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.For more information, contact Kelley Brayton, director of PCC International Education program, at 503-614-7146.
