Photos and story by James Hill
HILLSBORO, Ore. – With the growing numbers of Spanish-speaking children in Oregon schools, the issue of language has become more and more of a learning barrier. A new non-credit course presented by Portland Community College, Spanish for Teachers, can help teachers bridge the language gap. Instructor Michelle Myers will give teachers basic Spanish language skills, specifically designed to communicate with students and parents. Students will learn simple phrases and Latin American culture in a fun, interactive environment. The result is increased job skills, and effectiveness as a teacher and facilitator of learning. "If you have ever experienced frustration while trying to communicate in a foreign language, then you can understand how hard it is for school children,"said Amy Reardon, PCC Community Education manager. "This class is a fun opportunity to break down the barriers, creating more learning for the student and more job satisfaction for you." The 10-week class will be offered from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 15 through March 18, in Room S236 at Century High School, 2000 S.W. 234th Ave. in Hillsboro. Cost is $74.
