Create willow furniture for your garden with PCC class

Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – In a one-day workshop with Portland Community College, you can create your own garden furniture. Building Willow Furniture, a non-credit class, is an opportunity to add your own creation to your garden landscape. Build a rustic garden bench, table, fern stand or trellis. Even if you are a complete beginner, instructor Brian Phillips will show you how to twist beautiful branches of willow into durable furniture – a great way to tap your artistic flare while saving money on less personal, store-bought chairs."People ask me where I bought my willow bench and can’t believe I made it myself in a one-day PCC class,"said student Anna Villines. "Brian is great. He’ll get your hands dirty right away and keep you motivated to finish a beautiful addition to your garden." Students who want to build more than one piece can take the class three times this term: the workshop will meet from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17; Saturday, Feb. 7; and Saturday, March 6, in Room 113 of the Communications Technology Building at the PCC Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Cost is $39 with an additional $75 payable to the instructor for materials.
