PCC and partners stage annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration in Beaverton

BEAVERTON, Ore. The City of Beaverton and the Beaverton Baha’i Community will commemorate the life and work of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Southridge High School in Beaverton, 9625 S.W. 125th Ave. This annual event honors Dr. King and event organizers say people of all ages will enjoy the uplifting musical and dance performances and the reflections on the message and life of Dr. King. The event is free and open to the public. Mayor Rob Drake of Beaverton will provide welcome remarks. State Rep. Brad Avakian will emcee the event. Phyllis King, who marched with Dr. King, will be the keynote speaker. In addition, there will be performances by the ISing! Intel choir, the Beaverton High School Jazz Band, and the Mid-Valley Youth and Westside Baha’i dancers."The event is a reminder to the community of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s lifelong work for peace. It reaffirms that people can make a difference through their daily non-violent choices and actions,"said Drake. Dr. King, the famed civil rights leader, was assassinated in 1968. In addition to the City of Beaverton and the Beaverton Baha’i community, other partners helping sponsor the commemoration of Dr. King include the Beaverton High School Jazz Ensemble, Ananda Church, the Bilal Mosque, Intel’s ISing Choir, American Jewish Committee, Southminster Presbyterian Church, Southridge High School and Portland Community College.
