Teachers program celebrates 2004 graduates

CASCADE CAMPUS The Portland Teachers Program is hosting its 15th Annual "Celebration of Students"from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 28 in Terrell Hall 122 (705 N. Killingsworth St.) at the Cascade Campus to honor 60 aspiring teachers, from college freshmen to graduate students and alumni.The graduation ceremony will highlight nine students who have achieved their Oregon teaching license. The elementary teachers are: John Allen (Aloha), Celina Garrido (Cornelius), Alodie Lopez (southeast Portland), Cathy Parker (Gresham) and Margarita Portillo (southeast Portland). The middle and high school teachers are: Khalil Edwards (northeast Portland), language arts and social studies; Lindell Stone (southeast Portland), language arts and social studies; Tina Turner-Mitchell (northeast Portland), health and physical education; Jacy Morris (Beaverton), language arts."The celebration focuses on a group of people who have chosen a career that will benefit their communities and society as a whole,"said Deborah Cochrane, who directs the Portland Teachers Program. "The event honors each participant in the program for the positive choices they have made, and it highlights the graduates for the effort and sacrifices they have made to complete their bachelor’s degrees and a grueling year of graduate school to become licensed teachers."Leaders from the local communities and education, business and government will be on hand to celebrate the students. Washington Mutual sponsors the event. The program will also honor Kenneth Leander, senior regional vice president of Washington Mutual, for his contribution. The Portland Teachers Program is a partnership between PCC, Portland Public Schools, Portland State University and the University of Portland. It is designed to increase the number of culturally-competent teachers for Portland schools and focuses on recruiting underrepresented groups in the teaching profession.For more information, contact Deborah Cochrane at 503-978-5444.
