PCC trains hikers for Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens climbs

PORTLAND, Ore. – Make time this summer to experience Oregon’s majestic mountains with non-credit climbing classes offered by Portland Community College. Choose from three upcoming climbing classes, all held in Room 105 of Mt. Scott Hall at PCC’s Southeast Center, 2305 S.E. 82nd Ave. Classes are as follows:? Introduction to Backpacking. Learn the basics of backpacking on a three-day, 15-mile loop through the Indian Heaven Wilderness. Instructors from Oregon Peak Adventures will introduce equipment, menu and trip planning. The class includes guides, transportation, equipment and meals and meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, with a three-day field trip Wednesday, Aug. 11, to Friday, Aug. 13. Cost is $29 plus $300 paid to Oregon Peak Adventures. ? Mt. St. Helens Climb. Discover a perfect introduction to mountain climbing in the Cascades. The class includes guides, permits, transportation, trekking poles and lunch. The mandatory orientation will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Monday Aug. 2, with a field trip held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6. Cost is $29 plus a $100 paid to Oregon Peak Adventures. ? Mt. Adams Climb. Visit Mt. Adams via the South Spur route. From Cold Springs, the class will hike to camp at Lunch Counter, climb the summit, and then descend to camp. This features a non-technical climb with opportunity to develop snow travel and ice ax skills. Cost includes transportation and equipment. This class will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, July 6 to July 16, with a three-day field trip July 14 to July 16. Cost is $29 plus a $350 paid to Oregon Peak Adventures.
