PORTLAND, Ore. – The construction industry has teamed up with the Portland Community College Foundation to stage the first annual PCC Golf Challenge. The tournament is set for Friday, Sept. 17. Proceeds from the event will support student scholarships, enhance college programs and help purchase equipment. Golfers will be playing 18 holes at the Pleasant Valley Golf Club in Clackamas and will be greeted by 127 acres of fairways and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood. The Foundation has been working steadily all summer with a blue ribbon steering committee of construction industry volunteers to make the tournament a big success. "Our goal is to raise $40,000 for PCC programs and students. We’re on track to that and hopefully more," said Bob Walsh, president of Walsh Construction Co. and a co-chair of the event. "PCC is a huge community asset but people don’t appreciate what the college is doing."Thane Cleland, CEO of Cleland Woolworth Capital Group, is also co-chairing the tournament and said the committee has been working since last April to secure sponsorships, prizes and signing up a full field of golfers. "Our big goal is to help build the Foundation," Cleland said. "This is our first shot at doing something that will provide financial benefit to the Foundation, which translates to help for the students."Tournament presenting sponsors are Walsh Construction, Emerick Construction Co., Skanska USA and Howard S. Wright Construction Co. The shotgun start will begin at 11 a.m. with a box lunch, followed with a buffet dinner and awards program at 4:30 p.m.
