PCC Sylvania Campus offers slate of non-credit recreation classes

PORTLAND, Ore. – Looking for a great workout? This fall, you can take a non-credit class in tango, nightclub and social dance, therapeutic yoga, water aerobics, or capoeria at Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Capoeria may be the most unique workout you’ve ever had. Described as an Afro-Brazilian art form of liberation, ritual, dance, duel, spirit and strategy, capoeria strengthens you muscles and challenges your flexibility. Join instructor David Allison as he unfolds your sense of balance and motion. The four-week class will be offered from 7 to 7:50 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 28 through Oct. 21. Cost is $39. For the individual striving for an improved fitness level, Veronica Spickler will lead Water Aerobics: Shallow Water Exercise. The class includes warm-up techniques, extended aerobic segments, flexibility and strength training. The 11-week class will meet from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 28 through Dec. 9, at the pool in the Health Technology Building. Cost is $89. Argentine Tango, led by Polly McBride, offers the basics of authentic tango an elegant, sensuous dance that is again becoming the passion of dancers worldwide. Come alone or sign up with a partner. The class will offered from 8:15 to 9:30 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 1 through Nov. 12, in Room 101 of the Health Technology Building. Cost is $39. Don’t stay home on Saturday nights anymore. Led by instructor Polly McBride, Nightclub and Social Dancing will teach you the moves you need to go out dancing in nightclubs and social situations with confidence. Both singles and couples will pick up the two-step, swing, and Latin dances easily. The eight-week class will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturdays, Oct. 2 through Nov. 20, in Room 101 of the Health Technology Building. Cost is $75. Lloyd Pauze will lead Therapeutic Yoga, an approach that accommodates your body type and stress and moves you to greater strength and flexibility. You will emerge with a step-by-step sequence for your own personal yoga practice. The 11-week class will meet from 11 a.m. to noon, Saturdays, Oct. 2 through Dec. 11, in Room 101 of the Health Technology Building. Cost is $65.
