PCC celebrates Japanese New Year Jan. 30

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – Portland Community College is joining the Japanese American Citizens League, Portland Taiko and Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center to host the Japanese-American New Year Celebration "Mochitsuki 2005." The event is on Sunday, Jan. 30, at the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. There will be two Japanese dance shows in the campus’ Performing Arts Center. The first will feature Sahomi Tachibana’s "Mochi Madness" at 1 p.m. The second show will spotlight the Japanese dance school Fujinami-kai at 2:45 p.m. Tachibana has been a leading dancer in classical Japanese dance and Kabuki since 1948. The shows will also include storytelling, Portland Taiko and more. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors, and $4 for children. Tickets are available at Safeway TicketsWest outlets or by calling 1-800-992-8499.In conjunction to the performances, there will be a free cultural fair in the College Center (CC) Building mall from noon to 4:30 p.m. It will include traditional Mochi pounding (rice treat) plus other food, calligraphy, ikebana, games and more. Parking is free and TriMet bus routes 44 and 78 service the campus.
