ROCK CREEK CAMPUS – More than 400 high school students from Hood River to Banks and all areas in between, including Portland, Hillsboro and Sandy, will get hands-on with heavy equipment and semi-trucks at Portland Community College’s Diesel Career Fair. The Diesel Service Technology department is hosting the fifth annual event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22 in Room 117 of Building 2 at the Rock Creek Campus, 17705 N.W. Springville Road. The Northwest Diesel Industry Council and local heavy equipment and heavy-duty truck companies are sponsors of the event. PCC diesel students will serve as trainers with a number of stations set up in Building 2. "Participants will be able to operate equipment, disassemble, assemble and test components and climb around on new trucks and equipment," said Russ Dunnington, Diesel Technology instructor. "It is a lot of fun for all who come." Students will learn what today’s diesel technicians do in the field. It includes air conditioning troubleshooting, anti-lock braking systems, Bobcat skid steer operation, electrical component troubleshooting, electronic engine diagnostics and hydraulic system troubleshooting. The newest heavy equipment and medium and heavy-duty trucks will be on display for students. Participating high schools include Vernonia, Aloha, Hood River, Dufur, Forest Grove, Gresham, Glencoe, Banks, Sandy, Sherwood, St. Helens, Capital and Hillsboro.
