Give craft skills a spin with fabric arts classes

PORTLAND, Ore. – Experiment with fiber or make your own soft, colorful yarn for knitting or crochet projects. Portland Community College will offer two new non-credit classes, beginning this April, at Fiber Art Northwest, 315 S.W. Montgomery St. Instructor Sage Walden will teach Spinning Workshop. From preparation of fibers to plying your first small skien of yarn, discover the ancient technology of spinning by using a drop spindle. The class will meet from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday April 9 through April 16. Cost is $49. Instructor Valeri DeGroot will lead Exploring Fibers in Knitting. Learn the characteristics and benefits of using different fibers in knitting by making a washcloth a week from linen, cotton, synthetics, and soy silk. Students will use their discoveries to plan a project for the final two weeks incorporating two or more fibers. The class will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, April 13 through May 18. Cost is $69.
