Graphic design students show off final portfolios

Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – About two dozen graduating second-year graphic design students at Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus will host an open house to show off their final portfolios. These student projects will transform the graphic design studio and provide a visual array of graphics products. WHAT: The students present portfolios of their work and discuss their projects, which spans two years. Many portfolios consist of seven to ten pieces and contain logos and corporate identity packages, brochures, catalogs, magazines, personal promotion items and illustration. WHEN: 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 10 in Room 125 of the CT Building at the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. QUOTE: "The open house forces students to focus," said Cece Cutsforth, graphic design instructor at PCC. "It helps them focus on walking out of the door here with a professional-level portfolio. We bring in professionals from the outside to review their portfolios and conduct mock interviews. The feedback is often very blunt, but it helps them transition into the working world." WHY: Provides an opportunity for students to impress an outside audience. Past students have gone on to work at the Portland Art Museum, a number of ad and printing agencies, The Oregonian, OMSI and Darkhorse Comics, to name a few.
