Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – Your sewing machine is a handy, creative machine when working properly; a frustrating, confusing monster when it’s not. A vast majority of machines sent to repair shops could be fixed at home with little or no technical knowledge. Portland Community College will show you how with a non-credit class beginning this summer. With more than 40 years in the sewing machine business, instructor Ray White has seen it all. In Sewing Machine Repair, he will show you how to troubleshoot, diagnose and work through all kinds of machine jams, no matter what the model. Students will learn through the demonstration and hands-on repair of their own machines. The result is know-how that can limit repair interruptions and keep sewing projects flowing smoothly. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, July 7 through July 9 at the PCC Southeast Center, 2305 S.E. 82nd Ave. Cost is $484. Students are asked to bring their sewing machines to class. For more information, contact the PCC Community Education office at 503-788-6265.
