Photos and story by

CASCADE CAMPUS – Wayne Mendezona has coached in Austria, Bahrain and Kuwait. Now he’s going to coach at Portland Community College. PCC has selected Mendezona to join the men’s basketball program as the new head coach, replacing Eric Stang. Mendezona, who has 17 years of coaching experience, has post-season experience and has led several nationally ranked NAIA teams. Off the court, he’s done well, too. He holds two master’s degrees, including one in sports management, from the United States Sports Academy. "It is the hope of the athletic program and administration that his experience on the court, combined with his experience with people and cultures around the world, will provide him with the tools to develop a successful tradition at Portland Community College," said Karl Easttorp, PCC athletic director.Recently, Mendezona served as the head coach at Simpson University (2000-2004) in Redding, Calif. He also won the 2003 NCCAA II West Regional Tournament and finished third at the NCCAA II National Tournament. Currently, he owns and directs the Quick Handle basketball skill camps and clinics around the nation. He has written four books, produced three videos and taught more than 15,000 youngsters in the last 10 years. His international playing and coaching career gave him the opportunity to travel to 28 countries. Last year, the PCC men’s team, based at the Cascade Campus (705 N. Killingsworth Street), finished seventh in the Southern Region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges with a 7-20 record.
