Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – For thousands of Oregon students, their ability to pursue an education just got easier. Governor Ted Kulongoski will sign the $80 million Oregon Opportunity Grant at 12:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in the auditorium of the new Dan Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building on Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth Street. Before the signing ceremony, the Governor will take part in a roundtable discussion at 12:30 p.m. with students from Cascade Campus about the Oregon Opportunity Grant, tuition, educational programs and other issues. PCC District President Preston Pulliams will serve as moderator of the discussion. The signing of the bill will follow the roundtable. The Oregon Opportunity Grant will support an additional 20,000 students statewide during the next biennium. The grant will fund eligible full-time students the first year; and part-time (half-time) and full-time students in the second year of the biennium. More financial aid translates to more students taking advantage of programs and courses offered. In 2004-05, almost 16,000 students attended classes at the Cascade Campus and more than 91,000 students attend PCC annually.
