Mendelssohn’s Sister: A presentation on the life and music of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel Sylvia Gray, pianist Christy Anne Hamilton, soprano Tuesday, November 22, 2005 1:00pm Performing Arts Center Sponsored by Portland Community College Sylvania Women’s Resource Center While Female composers have always existed, their work has often been overlooked. This program will help remedy the lack. It will focus on Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn, who celebrates her 200th birthday on November14, 2005. While she wrote for a variety of instruments and combinations, some of her most lovely compositions were Lieder (accompanied songs) and piano solos. Sylvia Gray and Christy Anne Hamilton will combine forces to present a lecture-recital to help honor her memory. Sylvia Gray is an accomplished pianist and has taught history at PCC for 13 years. Sylvia has recently begun to work up a repertoire of pieces by female composers. Christy Anne Hamilton received her Master of Music in vocal performance from Portland State University. A student of Christine Meadows, she was first place winner of the Oregon District Metropolitan Opera auditions in November 2003, and sang in the Beethoven Egmont in October with the Portland Chamber Orchestra. With the PSU Opera, she sang Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus under the direction of world-famous Tito Capobianco.
