Contemporary Crafts partners with PCC for artists' workshops

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Community College is partnering with Contemporary Crafts to offer a slate of innovative non-credit workshops this winter. All classes meet at the Contemporary Crafts Gallery, 3934 S.W. Corbett. Contemporary Crafts Museum and Gallery in Portland is the premier craft presenter in the region, collecting and showcasing exemplary work from the early 20th century to the present. In Ceramic Hand building, students use techniques to create unique, functional and sculptural pieces. Discover texture and color with low fire techniques. Fee covers studio use, materials and firing. The class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 29 through March 5. Cost is $134. Learn about glass as art while making a fused glass night-light in Fused Glass: Light Up Your Night. The class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. Cost is $39. Fee includes studio materials and glass. In Introduction to Bookbinding, create a unique sketchbook using traditional bookbinding techniques. Students will be introduced to the tools of bookbinding, and learn several basic stitches that will allow them to continue creating after class time. The class will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. Cost is $35. Educate yourself about bamboo as an art material and Make a Bamboo Lamp. Learn how to bend strips of bamboo and work with handmade paper to create a beautiful lamp. The class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18. Cost is $42. Chainmaking with Metals uses copper, brass and nickel wire to make unsoldered chains. Chain styles include cable, s-hook, Egyptian spiral, beehive and Byzantine. Also learn jump rings and handmade clasps. Bring wire cutters, round nose, chain nose and flat nose pliers, ruler and fine point marker. The class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Cost is $35. Learn the folk art of Pysanky: Ukrainian Egg-Dying. Students will be introduced to the magical batik-like technique that yields these traditional eggs, each a one-of-a-kind patchwork of color. History and symbolism will be discussed. Bring one dozen clean, blown out eggs, pencil and egg crate. The class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 4. Cost is $35. Learn the ancient method of fusing glass onto metal in an Introduction to Enameling: Weekend Workshop. Students sift and paint enamels to create simple tiles, charms and a small bowl of their unique design. Also learn kiln-fired techniques of stencils, decals, sgraffiti, painting and foils. Bring a fine Sharpie, tweezers, small paintbrushes and dust mask. The two-day workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 11 through March 12. Cost is $74 fee.
