Gear up to get around PCC this spring
Photos and story by James Hill
PCC’s Parking and Transportation Services has plenty of options for students and staff to make sure they get to class and work. For the upcoming spring term, students may order permits online until midnight March 26. The charge goes to the student’s PCC account and the permit is mailed out around March 29. Please note that if you order online do not go to a business office to get your permit otherwise you may be charged twice.
To get the permit online, simply log on to MyPCC, go to the “College Business Tab” and scroll down to “Parking and Transportation.” Students should have their vehicle license plate numbers ready.
So now you have your permit, but sometimes parking lots are full and many of the communities surrounding PCC’s campuses frown on students and staff parking on the streets. So what’s the alternative? There are plenty.
During the course of any term, PCC has numerous free shuttles that connect campuses, making it ideal for students who don’t have a car or who don’t want to drive across town. The PCC shuttle operates routes to each of the main comprehensive campuses, including the Southeast Center, Portland Metro Workforce Training Center and the Hawthorne District in southeast Portland. Check the Parking and Transportation Services website for the complete Shuttle schedule.
Or students, staff and faculty can use TriMet to get to any campus or training center. PCC’s Parking and Transportation Services will even provide a discount on the purchase of a monthly TriMet pass. These passes go on sale the 20th of each month.
“Purchase your monthly TriMet pass at any campus bookstore and PCC will pay $12 towards the cost of the pass,” said John Garner, manager of PCC’s parking and transportation services. “PCC has one overflow parking lot for Sylvania and another for Cascade. Permits are not needed to park in these lots and there is regular free shuttle service between the lots and campus.”
The Cascade overflow lot is located at the Portland Metro Workforce Training Center on 42nd and Killinsgworth Street. The Southeast Center shuttle connects this location to the Cascade Campus. For the Sylvania Campus, the extra parking is located at the Mt. Park overflow lot. Shuttle service is available from this lot, Monday through Thursday, every 15 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The lot is located exactly one mile from the Sylvania Campus on Kerr Parkway.
However you get to PCC, you can always call Parking and Transportation Services and get help planning your transportation needs. To plan your trips, contact Michael Kuehn at 503-977-4242, or visit the Parking and Transportation website.
