PANTHER FLASH: Basketball teams wrap up improved seasons
Photos and story by James Hill
The PCC women’s basketball team broke the school record for most wins in a season with their 11th win in a 66-42 victory over Chemeketa on Wednesday. The previous record for wins in a season was nine. Krystal Saling once again threatened the school record for points in a game (36) with another 30-plus point game in leading the Portland Panthers over the Chemeketa Storm 66-42. Saling scored 33 points on 8 of 16 shooting from the floor, and 14 of 15 from the free throw line.
The Panther defense held the Chemeketa offense to just 42 points on 25% shooting overall and only 1 of 15 from behind the three-point arc. Portland jumped to a 19 point lead at 36-17 by halftime, and ended the game with its largest lead of the night, 24 points. The game never was in doubt, as no Storm player scored more than 9 points on the evening. Portland finished the season with 11 wins, two more than any previous season, to establish a new school record for wins in a season.
The men’s team tied for the second most wins in the program’s history with their 14th triumph in a 73-71 victory over Chemeketa on Wednesday. The school record is 15 wins in a season.
Portland ended the season in fine fashion with a 73-71 win by beating the second place team in the Southern Region, only Chemeketa’s third loss in 14 games in region play. Portland was led by Rory Morgan, who finished off an outstanding season with 23 points on 8 of 15 shooting, 5 of 6 from behind the three-point line.
Keith McMurry (8 of 11 from the field) and Avery Rosen also each poured in 19 points. LaMarcus Stuart once again was unable to play. Riley Luettgerodt polished off a superb season with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Portland was down 7 point, 35-28 at the half, but outscored the Storm 47-36 in the second half to come back for the victory. The Panthers only turned the ball over 3 times in the second half after committing 14 turnovers in the first half. The Portland Panthers finish the season with 14 wins, twice as many as last year. The 14 wins was the second most in PCC’s history in the NWAACC Conference.
