PORTLAND, Ore. – This is one history lesson nobody should miss.

The 40th Annual Draft Horse Plowing Exhibition, a festival of living history exhibitions and demonstrations, is set for Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus, 17705 N.W. Springville Road. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.

Besides watching teams of two-ton draft horses tilling fields, thousands of guests will enjoy demonstrations of old-time trades and crafts. Horse-drawn wagons will take visitors throughout the campus and everyone, including the majestic horses, will enjoy birthday cake.

Entrance fee to the horse plow event is $5 per car. However, visitors can also tour the Washington County Museum for free and view the newest exhibits on the history of logging and timber in the area.

“This is a wonderful living history day, perfect for children and families,” said Mark Granlund, executive director of the Washington County Historical Society & Museum. “Kids love this event because there are lots of animals and hands-on activities.”

Granlund says the 40th anniversary is a very special milestone for an event that celebrates the area’s agrarian history. “Even now, farming is extremely important to Washington County and our state. The Draft Horse Plowing Exhibition celebrates that rich heritage,” he said.

The Washington County Museum is located on the Rock Creek Campus of Portland Community College.
