'Stop The Hate!' returns to PCC
Photos and story by James Hill
From May 19-21 at the PCC-Sylvania Campus, the college is hosting a “Stop the Hate!” workshop. The event will train people to guide others on ways to prevent and combat bias
incidents and hate crimes on campus as well as foster the development of community. This award-winning program is in its fourth year at PCC.
The “Stop the Hate” program allows top administrators, student affairs professionals, faculty and students to learn new innovative tools to take action on hate crimes and bias-motivated violence issues on campus. The cost is free to PCC staff and students.
It is a three-day, 18-20 hour “Train the Trainer” program developed by the Association of College Unions International in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League, Tolerance.org of the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Center for the Prevention of Have Violence and the National Center for Hate Crime Prevention.
Attendees will commit to being part of the “Stop the Hate” consortium of educators to
combat hate on campus. They will also implement an action plan consisting of a minimum of six campus hate crime prevention efforts that might include workshops,
seminars, host rallies, writing articles and developing campus response teams.
Benefits of being selected as a mentor include receiving a premiere training manual specifically for colleges and universities; skills and information to train students, faculty, and staff on anti-hate initiatives; suggested approaches to respond to hate
crimes and bias-motivated incidents; knowledge about hate crime legislation and
legal issues; expert resources and access to current hate crime issues and
materials; and access to resources.
