Photos and story by

Ophthalmic Medical Tech students were awarded more than $10,000 worth of scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year. Seven students from the first and second year of the program received money both from the PCC Foundation and the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Education and Research Foundation based in St. Paul, Minn. This foundation receives donations from corporations and foundations, professional societies and individuals.

Students from ophthalmic training programs all over the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada compete for awards distributed annually. The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is the international certifying agency representing the combined interests of ophthalmology-related societies and associations in developing the field of ophthalmic medical assisting.

It was founded in 1969, continues to develop standards for knowledge and skill, fosters training, creates continuing education opportunities, and offers a meeting place for professionals who share these interests. PCC’s nationally-accredited Ophthalmic Technician training program has been located at the Cascade Campus since it’s inception in 1992. Graduates of the program are employed by eye surgeons in clinical practice, surgical centers, and in medical research.
