Students hold fund-raiser for New Orleans trip

Photos and story by

Sylvania Campus ASPCC students are head back to New Orleans to help rebuild. If you would like to help them get there, go to the Baja Fresh on Lower Boones Ferry Rd. (by Safeway and GI Joes – 17805 SW 65th Ave.) from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 9. Anyone who mentions “I want to help support students at Sylvania PCC go to New Orleans" will have their tickets put into a donation box. Baja Fresh will donate 15 percent of all ticket sales at the end of the day to go toward the students’ goal.

As an ongoing effort, the student government members will be going to New Orleans in an effort to aid in rebuilding from the destruction of Katrina in August 2005. Lead by student leadership coordinator, Cami L. Bishop, students and staff members will work in the Ninth Ward district of New Orleans.

Participants will gain valuable experience and provide much needed aid to the local people who are still affected more than a year after the devastation of the storms. They will gut, rebuild and clean-up ruined homes, provide care and relief to those in need. The spring break trip (March 25, to March 29) will have 14 students and staff members making the trek.

Financial support for PCC participants is generated by continual fundraising efforts by students and staff members. Donations are greatly accepted by contacting the Sylvania ASPCC office. The next trip is planned for June (dates to be determined). Students interested in participating are urged to contact the ASPCC office in CC 101, or call 503-977-4361 or e-mail aspcc.sy@pcc.edu.
