Documentary filmmaker to show films at PCC Cascade
Photos and story by James Hill
Independent filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris will present his film, “Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus.
The screening will take place in Room 104 of the Moriarty Arts & Humanities Building, on the PCC Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth St. The screening is free and open to the public.
The showing is a kick-off for the Cascade Festival of African Films, which takes place in February. Harris will be on hand for the event and also will show excerpts from “Reflections in Black,” a work in progress that reveals the way black photographers have helped to create and sustain a sense of community for African-Americans.
“Twelve Disciples” made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and has received numerous awards and honors. Harris’ other documentaries include “Vintage – Families of Value” and “Heaven, Earth and Hell.”
Harris was raised in the Bronx, New York, and in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. He has received a wide array of awards, grants and fellowships from such institutions as the Sundance Institute, the Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“We’re really lucky to have the director here for this screening,” said Michael Dembrow, an English instructor at PCC and longtime member of the Cascade Film Festival board of directors. “This is a good way to get people thinking about next February’s festival.”
Harris’ appearance in Portland was made possible by a grant from the Oregon Council for the Humanities.
