Psychology class to administer screening for depression at Sylvania
Photos and story by James Hill
A Portland Community College Introduction to Abnormal Psychology class is running a National Depression Screening Day even on Wednesday, Nov 14 in the CC Building Upper Mall at the Sylvania Campus.
It will be in conjunction with a “Women’s Wellness Fair” run by the Sylvania Women’s Resource Center. Psychology students plan to staff the screening event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. for evening students and staff. The event is free.
Students will provide education, information and screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and PTSD. The instruments used for the screenings are used nationally and the data from our college event will be used to collect data on the prevalence of disorders in the college and community, and to contribute to a national database.
The students are planning, organizing, and running the event as part of a service-learning project for the course. They are working on prize giveaways from local businesses, and providing screening forms and information to interested participants. They are also creating a handout with referral resources for various agencies in the area, including low- or no-cost resources.
The screening forms will be confidential, and when the participants are done filling out the forms, they will be offered the opportunity to have the form scored by a licensed PCC counselor. If the participant’s score indicates risk for a disorder, the counselors will assess the level of risk, and provide referrals to on-campus, and off-campus resources.
