PCC art instructor’s work on display in New York and around the globe
Photos and story by James Hill
Marie Sivak is going places – Italy, England and now New York.
A number of drawings by the Sylvania Campus art instructor will be included in the exhibition “Narrations” at the Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York. The exhibition will take place from Jan. 17 through March 1. The opening reception is Thursday, Jan. 17. Sivak will give a lecture about her work at the gallery on Saturday, Jan. 19.
Sivak, a resident of Wilsonville, is one of seven artists from across the country participating in “Narrations.” Her work explores both the fantastic and the mundane in daily life. Typically, objects such as telephones, tables, boots and people are instilled with hidden emotional significance. Her abstractions are influenced by contemporary art and decorative crafts. Sivak’s work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; at galleries at Miami University in Ohio; and in private collections in Switzerland, Bolivia and England.
A Cleveland native, Sivak recently displayed her work at A.I.R. Gallery in New York, Art London with Panter & Hall Gallery; The Drawing Gallery, London; Kunstihoone in Tallinn, Estonia; and Palazzo Pretorio, Volterra, Italy. She has shown her work extensively in the Pacific Northwest as well; her most recent solo exhibition was at the Laura Russo Gallery in Portland in November.
She was the 2005 winner of the Yeck National Young Sculptor’s Award, (Oxford, Ohio), a recipient of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship and a grant from the Ruth Chenven Foundation. She has taught sculpture, basic design, and drawing since 1997 at PCC’s Sylvania Campus.
