Student-led canned food drive highlights MLK week

Photos and story by

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues.

From Jan. 21 to Jan. 25, students at Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus will honor that legacy by hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Canned Food Drive to benefit the Oregon Food Bank. The event’s collection center will be in Room 128B of Building 3 at the campus, 17705 N.W. Springville Road. The goal is to collect 300 pounds worth of canned foods and non-perishable items.

The week’s events will end with a reception featuring a student short film highlighting their version of Dr. King’s Dream, held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, in Room 114 of Building 3. There will be a short memorial service for Yolanda King, Dr. King’s eldest daughter who passed away this past year. This reception is free and open to the public.

The canned food drive is sponsored by PCC-Rock Creek, Safeway, Albertson’s and the Corporation for National and Community Service. For more information, call (503) 614-7279.
