Sustainability conference planned for Lane Community College, all welcome to attend

Lane Community College will host a national conference on sustainability for community college staff on April 16 and 17 in the Center for Meeting and Learning, building 19, main campus in Eugene. The conference will present best practices and other information about the community college role in sustainability in areas such as workforce training, business development, curriculum, student life, facilities, planning, and food services. Designed for faculty, staff, administrators, and students, about 300 people are expected to attend. The public is welcome to register.
President Mary Spilde of president of Lane Community College will present opening remarks. Spilde has led Lane to a position of national prominence in the sustainability movement. Under her leadership, Lane established a sustainability program in 2004. The following year, she signed the international Talloires Declaration, a plan for environmental literacy and sustainability in education. She is a charter signatory to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment and serves on its Leadership Circle. Most recently, Spilde guided the development of a sustainability core value for Lane, which was approved unanimously by the college’s board in 2007.
Keynote speaker for the conference is Rusty Stephens, President of Wilson Community College in Wilson, NC. Stephens is regarded as a visionary leader in sustainability for community colleges.

Lane is rapidly emerging as a national leader in sustainability and has won five awards in the past two years, including the Campus Sustainability Leadership Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, and the Outstanding College Recycling Program Award from the National Recycling Coalition.
