PCC awarded $3.22 million from Worksystems Inc.

Portland Community College has been awarded $3.22 million grant from Worksystems Inc. to fund the college’s WorkSource One-Stop system.
Locations include: WorkSource Portland Metro Hillsboro (265 S.E. Oak, Suite A); WorkSource Portland Metro Tualatin (7995 S.W. Mohawk St.) and WorkSource Portland Metro North/Northeast (5600 N.E. 42nd Ave.). PCC’s workforce training centers provide dislocated workers, welfare recipients, and other unemployed and underemployed community residents with critical assistance necessary to get back into the workforce or to advance their career.
“This grant will allow PCC to continue to partner with Worksystems Inc. and the Oregon Employment Department to deliver an array of high quality workforce development services for adults and dislocated workers in the communities served by the three WorkSource Center sites,” said Pamela Murray, division dean of Workforce, Economic and Community Development at PCC.
At the WorkSource Centers, people can use the Internet to access and apply for jobs, create resumés from software templates, learn to type, use a fax machine for local faxes, computers for job search, laser printers to print out professional quality applications and resumés. They also can access up-to-date reference books for job search, resource room staff assistance, view posted job leads and be in the loop for WorkSource recruitments, obtain job referrals from the WorkSource staff and access funding for training in high-demand, high-growth occupations.
In 2007-08 alone, Murray said PCC provided almost 16,000 community residents with basic job search help and nearly 5,000 with career counseling, adult basic education, short-term skills training, or job-placement assistance. More than 2,500 people got a job directly as a result of PCC’s services.
“This project will expand existing local workforce partnerships,” Murray added. “PCC and our partners will deliver an industry demand-driven, skill-based system that offers customers comprehensive support and services.”
