Photos and story by

Sara Neill and Mario Garza are the new advisors in the Sylvania ROOTS program. Neill has been hired permanently after working since January this year in a temporary advisor position with the program while Garza will start work Sept. 15. Before coming to ROOTS, Neill worked as a career specialist with PCC’s Dislocated Workers program and has experience working as a part-time advisor on the Cascade Campus.

“She has over eight years of career counseling and academic advising for dislocated workers, and over four years counseling teen parents from diverse backgrounds to achieve academic success in High School and GED completion programs,” said Lynn Montoya, director of student support services program.

Garza has been working at Portland State University where he was an undergraduate academic advisor and community college liaison. He has more than 10 years experience working in post-secondary education with emphasis in academic advising, admissions and financial aid, multicultural support services and retention.

“He also has over fifteen years of experience as a mentor, tutor or advisor to ethnically diverse, first generation college bound youth from rural, suburban and urban environments,” Montoya added.

Congratulations to Sara and Mario!
