Welcome to the blog

Welcome to our first blog on the 2009 Oregon Legislature.

We are going to be using this site to keep you up to date with bills and votes in the Capital that could have an impact on Portland Community College, our students, staff or faculty. We also will fill you in on some of the anecdotes and notes of general interest at the Capitol.

I come by this job honestly. I was the assistant bureau chief, then bureau chief, for the Statesman Journal’s Capitol Bureau for four years. I wrote columns, articles and blogs from the Capitol. As such, I had “floor privileges,” which means reporters could be on the floor of the House or Senate, in the back or on the sides, taking notes and running interviews during session. More often than not, we stood back there and cracked wise with the legislators, who actually tend to be a pretty humorous bunch.

I’m PCC’s lobbyist now, so no more floor privileges. Still, I hope to use my years in the Capitol to keep you up-to-date on this session.

We also will use the new Legislature Web page to let you know about committee meetings that might interest you. And when we plan our PCC Day at the Capitol, we’ll use the site to invite anyone who wants to participate.

In the meantime, send me e-mails at dana.haynes@pcc.edu. And buckle up. This is going to be a wild ride.
