Carmen Martinez, respected chemistry instructor at Rock Creek, passes away
Photos and story by James Hill
Carmen Martinez, whose exploits in snowboarding, kickboxing, whitewater rafting, salsa dancing and chemistry were well known, passed away quietly at her sister’s home surrounded by family on Sunday, May 17.
There will not be a traditional funeral or memorial service for Martinez. However, there will be a party to be announced later, most likely sometime in June to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the fund that has been set up to help Carmen’s sister, who has been unemployed for many months now in order to care for Carmen exclusively at her home.
These donations can be made at any Unitas Credit Union branch to the Carmen Martinez Medical Fund. Donations can also be made to the Carmen Martinez Scholarship Fund by contacting the PCC Foundation at (503) 977-4382. This will benefit students involved in service-learning and the sciences, both subjects close that were close to her heart.
To learn more about Carmen, please read the PCC web feature produced a few years ago about her tale of survival following a snow board accident on Mt. Hood.
