Artist examines Scriabin’s ‘Stache’ in new show
Photos and story by James Hill
The new art show at Portland Community College’s Cascade Art Gallery might be the most innovative yet.
The Cascade Art Gallery (Room 102, Terrell Hall, Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth St.) is hosting artist Jack Ryan’s exhibit, “Scriabin’s Mustache,” which opens on Thursday, Feb. 25 and runs until March 31. A reception for the artist will be held on the opening day 6 to 8 p.m. and an artist’s talk from 11 a.m. to noon, Thursday, March 4, in Room 221, Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building at the campus. The hours of the Cascade Art Gallery are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“Scriabin’s Mustache” centers on Russian composer Alexander Scriabin’s life, eccentricities and flamboyant mustache. Ryan utilizes sound, video, light and sculptural works to playfully examine Scriabin. Born and raised in Portland, Ryan is an artist, independent curator and a member of Fugitive Projects, a collective, beehive and artist advocacy. He has exhibited and screened work, across the country and in Switzerland, Ireland, Canada and Egypt.
