New students can get head START with innovative Sylvania lab

Prospective new students to PCC Sylvania soon will have access to guidance about orientation, advising and registration in a convenient “one-stop,” easy-to-follow format.

Beginning Feb. 26, the Sylvania Campus will open the doors to its newly established START Lab – a resource center enabling new students to drop in and complete their orientation, first advising session and registration in a group-like setting.

Until now, new students were required to register in advance for in-person orientation – a process that could take up to six weeks because of increased enrollment at PCC. Instead, the START Lab model is a dedicated place for new students to access these services, at their convenience. Staffed with advisors, orientation staff and peer advisors, the START Lab enables more students to be served and offers new students a “meet-and-greet” opportunity to mingle before the start of a term.

Located in the CC Building, Room 206 (Computer Resource Center), the START Lab will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout winter term. Hours and days of operation will vary from term to term.

For more information about the START Lab, contact Teresa Salinas, Outreach and Orientation coordinator, at (503) 977-8521.
