PCC community urged to avoid driving for spring term

Photos and story by

Portland Community College is committed to being a good steward of the environment and to reducing the campus’ carbon emissions. Now the college is asking for students, staff and faculty to lend a hand.

At the Cascade Campus, many students have gotten hooked on cycling to class.

Everyone taking classes or working for PCC is encouraged to begin taking mass transit, biking, walking or joining a car pool to get to school. Reducing the number of automobile trips to our campuses would be a strong first step in reducing the college’s carbon footprint.

All PCC campuses are served by TriMet buses. Schedules can be found online. The college also offers subsidized TriMet passes. Earlier this year, college officials increased the number of passes from 800 to 1,200. Students need to go to a campus business office to receive discounted student passes.

PCC also operates a fleet of free shuttle buses that serve every campus and center.

Beyond the environmental good, using mass transit, biking or walking also would relieve pressure on crowded parking lots, especially during the first three weeks of the term.
