Harvest Fest to feature pumpkins, fun, rocket composter
Photos and story by Meryl Lipman
As PCC celebrates its 10th annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the, Rock Creek Campus, the college will be offering demonstrations in composting leftover cooked food and service ware in its brand new rocket composter, the first post-consumer waste composting system of its kind west of the Mississippi River.
This new addition to the college’s sustainability program brings Rock Creek, with its innovative vermi-composting system for pre-consumer scraps, ever closer to completing its garden to table to garden green loop.
The suggested donation is $5 per family, which includes, as long as the supply lasts, a free pumpkin from the Rock Creek Campus pumpkin patch. In addition to showcasing sustainability measures, the festival will include horse and tractor drawn hayrides, pumpkin patch, petting zoo featuring the animals of the PCC Rock Creek farm, caricature artist, coloring contests, pumpkin food tasting, face painting, henna tattoos, live music by The Fanno Creek Boys, raffles, and more.
On October 23 visitors also gain free admission to the Washington County Historical Society Museum as part of “Family Days,” an event which will center around historical games that children used to play, such as Jacks, pick-up sticks, hopscotch, and kick the can. Finally, this day offers a unique opportunity for neighbors and community members to learn about and weigh in on various options for an upcoming campus redesign set forth in the 2008 PCC Bond planning process, including roads, connectivity, building placement and more.
