Photos and story by James Hill
Paulann Petersen, Oregon’s poet laureate, is visiting Portland Community College in October.
The Petersen event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 19, in the auditorium of the Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building, 705 N. Killingsworth St. The presentation is hosted by the PCC Library and made possible through the Oregon Cultural Trust. It is free and open to the public.
Petersen was appointed poet laureate by Gov.Ted Kulongoski and is sixth in the state’s history. She has four full-length books of poetry: “The Wild Awake,” “Blood-Silk,” “A Bride of Narrow Escape,” and “Kindle.” A fifth, “The Voluptuary,” is forthcoming from Lost Horse Press in early fall of 2010. A former Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and the recipient of the 2006 Holbrook Award from Oregon Literary Arts, she serves on the board of Friends of William Stafford, organizing the January Stafford Birthday Events.
Oregon’s Poet Laureate program is a collaborative project of the state’s five cultural partners, Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Historical Society, Oregon Humanities, and State Historic Preservation Office, with funding from the Oregon Cultural Trust. The position of Oregon Poet was established by the governor of Oregon in April 23, 1923 and adopted by the Oregon Legislature in 1989.
