Brainstorming begins for Sylvania Building

GBD Architects led a discussion on Dec. 20 with members of the College Center Building committee from Sylvania Campus. The meeting is part of an ongoing series to discuss and analyze potential renovation plans for the building, of which nearly 75 percent will be modernized as part of bond-improvement funding. The goal is to transform the building into an accessible, easy-to-navigate student union.

“We’re assessing service adjacencies,” said Heather Lang, Dean of Student Development at Sylvania, who moderated the meeting. “We want to group like-services together in a way that makes sense for our students, as well as staff and faculty.”

This was the second meeting of the CC Building committee, so design plans are still in their formative stage.

Lang noted that on Jan. 20, a district-wide summit will be held to analyze the philosophy and values driving student services throughout the college.

“Looking at it from this ‘big picture’ perspective will enable us to create a cohesive plan for the district that unifies student services – for example, what we call these services and their locations on any given campus,” said Lang. “Students traveling between campuses will be better able to find their destinations; we want the process to be user-friendly.”
