Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus student leadership will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with an annual food drive to benefit the Oregon Food Bank in Washington County. This service project involves student groups stationing themselves at 10 Washington County grocery stores. They will collect canned food and staples from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Jan. 17 and then truck the collection to the Oregon Food Bank in Beaverton.

The Washington County grocery stores include three Albertsons (6055 S.W. 185th Ave., 7500 West Baseline, and 888 N.W. 25th Ave.), Haggens (18000 N.W. Evergreen Pkway), Dollar Tree (1297 N.W. 185th Ave) and Trader Joe’s (2285 N.W. 185th Ave).

In 2010, student groups from the Rock Creek Multicultural Center, Women’s Resource Center, College Assistance for Migrants Program, and Oregon Leadership Institute heard alarming statistics on the rise of hunger in Washington County, and the difficulty that non-profits were encountering raising food donations. They sprang into action, collecting 8,000 pounds of food from six grocery stores. This year they are not only expanding their operations, they are hoping to top 10,000 pounds on the scale of food donated.
