Blog: Pell Grant as top priority

Photos and story by

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Your PCC contingent visits Sen. Jeff Merkley and Rep. Davis Wu today.
Topic No. 1: Pell Grants. House Republicans call for a reduction of 15 percent in the popular program that supports higher education for low-income Americans. Their so-called Continuing Resolution also would shrink the maximum grant (now $5,550) by $800.
The Pell becomes more important during a bad economy. At PCC, the number of students receiving Pell grants doubled, from an estimated 7,500 in 2007-08 to 15,000 in 2009-10 (thank you James Hill for dredging up that stat while I’m on an Away Game).
We’ll keep you posted.
