Rock Creek gallery features instructor’s layered paintings of Finland

Photos and story by

Petra Sairanen’s new painting exhibit, “Perimeter: We Live Here Now,” is on display at the Helzer Art Gallery now through March 11. This is an exhibition organized by The Art Gym at Marylhurst University in collaboration with the Archer Gallery at Clark College, and the Cascade, Rock Creek and Sylvania campuses.

‘Koirumetsa,’ 2011 Oil on Canvas, by Petra Sairanen.

Sairanen’s familiarity with the landscapes and seasons of Finland and Lapland lie directly beneath the patterns and webs of her paintings. Examine the edges of these paintings and you will begin to discern Sairanen’s working method, involving myriad layers of oil paint, applied in glazes, often with wax added to her medium.

Sairanen teaches at the Rock Creek Campus and earned her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of New Hampshire and her master’s degree in painting from Boston University. She has also studied printmaking extensively.

The Helzer Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The gallery is located in the Building 3 Mall.
