A ‘moving’ art show opens at PCC March 31
Photos and story by James Hill
Portland Community College’s Northview Art Gallery’s new exhibit will be quite moving.
Local artist and PCC art instructor Evertt A. Beidler’s exhibition “Moves Management” will feature his new multi-disciplinary work from March 31 through April 29 at the art gallery, Room 214, CT Building, Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The exhibition features two kinetic works and a short experimental film titled, “Moves Manager,” which can be previewed at vimeo.com/19258676. Beidler will host a gallery talk at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 31 with a reception afterward.
The sculpture and film project is funded by grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and the exhibition by an opportunity grant from the Oregon Arts Commission.
“The kinetic sculpture and film that is featured in the show are intended to address the sense of purpose many of us derive from the work we undertake as professionals seeking to earn a living,” said Beidler, a Southwest Portland resident. “The works employ humor, irony, and honesty to provide the viewer with a glimpse into the monotony and often repetitious actions that are required in the pursuit of long-term goals.”
Beidler’s work is included in private collections across the United States such as the permanent collection of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and on public display at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers in Cairo, Illinois, which is the first public commission of his career. Images and reviews of his work have been featured in publications such as Sculpture Magazine, The Daily Constitutional, The Oregonian, the Willamette Week, Culturephile: Portland Arts, Blog4Culture, and the Seattle Weekly. His exhibition record includes group exhibitions at the Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton, N.J.) and the Nu-Art Series Gallery (St. Louis, Mo.), as well as solo exhibitions at Gallery II (Washington State University), the Autzen Gallery (Portland State University) and Gallery 500 (Portland).
The PCC Northview Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, contact gallery curator Mark Smith at: msmith@pcc.edu.
