The Arpana Dance Company will perform “Pancha Bhootam” (“Five Elements”), a classical Indian dance in the Bharatanatyam style, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 19, Performing Arts Center, Sylvania Campus (12000 S.W. 49th Avenue). Tickets are $15 for all PCC faculty, staff and students when showing their identification cards at the box office.

A performance by the Arpana Dance Company.

The dance will explore the five elements of nature – earth, wind, fire, water and space – which have been central to ancient civilizations. These elements have been integrated into their spiritual and social customs, and rituals. In “Pancha Bhootam,” organizers said great care has been given to selecting lyrics and compositions that, expressed through exquisite dance movements and patterns, reflect these elements.

The dance is made possible by the local non-profit Kalakendra, a society dedicated to the performing arts of India and the subcontinent. Its mission is to introduce, promote and enhance awareness of the various performing arts of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka). They routinely present concerts, classical dances, recitals and lecture-demonstrations.
