Rock Creek Campus grad earns EPA fellowship
Story and Photos By Janis Nichols.
PCC graduate Tyanna Smith has been awarded a fellowship from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Only 40 are awarded nationally. The fellowship provides up to $48,900 over the life of the fellowship.
“I was extremely happy to receive the fellowship,” Tyanna said. “I couldn’t stop smiling. PCC helped me realize what path I should take. The range of classes available helped me figure out what I wanted to study. My goal is to earn a Ph.D. in environmental science with a focus on research. I hope to return to Yakima and work on environmental issues.”
Smith received an associate’s degree at PCC’s graduation ceremony. A Native American and a 2008 graduate of Newport High School, Smith begins a summer internship at Portland State University through the Portland Bridges to Baccalaureate Program, and in September, she will enroll full time at PSU with a major in environmental science and a minor in botany.
